DBS survey finds 88% of major businesses are using or testing tokenized money

A survey conducted by DBS found nearly nine in 10 large businesses have deployed or are piloting tokenized money.

The adoption of tokenized money globally is moving faster than expected among businesses seeking better liquidity management and smoother access to new markets, according to the Singapore bank DBS.

The survey conducted by the bank found nearly nine in 10 large businesses have deployed or are piloting tokenized money, Reuters reported.

Conducted between June and July, the survey covered 422 business and finance leaders across 11 markets, including the United States, Britain, China, and Germany. The survey focused on organizations with annual revenue above $500 million.

Roughly two-thirds said their businesses had deployed tokenized money at scale or introduced it in selected locations.

Stablecoins lead corporate adoption

Stablecoins lead tokenized asset adoption at 63%, with tokenized deposits (53%) and tokenized money market funds (52%) following closely behind.

Stablecoins, as you ‌know, offer better fungibility across payment intermediaries, not just across banks. They are less cumbersome from a permissioning standpoint, said DBS transaction services head Lim Soon Chong.

Most companies expect benefits within two years.

The findings come as businesses adjust to shifting trade routes. Over three-quarters have changed operations and expanded into new markets following supply-chain reconfigurations, with Southeast Asia the leading destination.

Currency choices are also changing alongside payment systems.

The survey found that more than half of correspondents in Australia and Britain were considering renminbi for trade settlement over the next one to two years.

Businesses seek bank support

Leaders in the financial world still face barriers, including regulatory and compliance uncertainty, data security concerns, operational risks, limited internal expertise, and integration complexity.

According to the survey, some 64% of respondents wanted banks to provide a single integration point into the tokenized money ecosystem, while 63% sought help with pilots and implementation.

Although tokenization improves liquidity management, Lim warned that navigating parallel settlement networks may raise compliance requirements and operational friction.
