Greece approves 10% crypto gains tax and 15% DeFi levy

Greece approves a 10% crypto gains tax and 15% DeFi levy, with rules set to apply from January 2027.

Greece’s parliament approved a new crypto tax framework, introducing a 10% capital gains tax and a separate 15% levy on staking and decentralized finance (DeFi) income.

The main tax provisions are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, CoinDesk reported.

Under the framework, individuals with crypto gains exceeding €500 annually will pay 10% tax. Once gains exceed that threshold, the full gain becomes taxable.

Capital gains taxes will also apply when crypto is spent on goods or services.

According to the Finance Ministry, returns from staking, crypto lending, and DeFi liquidity provision will be classified as interest income and taxed at 15%.

Investors with annual crypto losses exceeding €500 can carry them forward for five years to offset future crypto gains.

Eligible investors who voluntarily declare past gains within 12 months of the law’s publication can avoid fines and interest, provided they pay the tax owed within 60 days of filing.

While the Finance Ministry maintains that crypto-to-crypto swaps are non-taxable, parliament’s Scientific Service warned that the draft legislation’s current wording could cover these trades.

A senior finance ministry official told Reuters that implementation directives covering transparency and audit requirements would follow in the coming weeks.
