Binance promises to cover losses
Binance said the breach affected about $6.3 billion and that partners had frozen roughly $3 billion.
The crypto exchange pledged to cover losses and said withdrawals were expected to resume within 48 hours.
HashKey researcher Tim Sun argued that the breach could weaken risk appetite.
It may further dampen risk appetite and prompt investors to reassess the safety of assets held on centralized exchanges, as well as counterparty, solvency and liquidity risks, said Sun.
Crypto stocks join wider sell-off
The hack had multiple effects across the crypto market.
Coinbase shares fell 4.8%, and Strategy dropped nearly 6% in extended U.S. trading, Reuters reported.
The crypto market decline coincided with a global technology-stock sell-off as investors questioned whether heavy AI spending would generate adequate returns. Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.9%.
Standard Chartered’s head of digital asset research, Geoffrey Kendrick, told Reuters that further weakness was possible until more details emerged and affected assets were unfrozen.
