The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued a warning to football clubs, including teams competing in the Premier League. Sponsorship agreements with unauthorized cryptocurrency companies are now prohibited. The regulator said some crypto and trading platforms have been using partnerships with football clubs to reach large audiences despite lacking authorization to operate in the UK. 

According to the FCA, such arrangements could expose supporters to potentially risky financial products and leave clubs vulnerable to reputational damage. 

Clubs Urged to Vet Sponsorship Partners

In a letter sent to football organizations, the regulator urged football clubs to carefully examine the source of sponsorship funds and assess whether potential partners pose financial crime risks. Lucy Castledine, director of consumer investments at the FCA, said, “Millions of football fans trust their club’s badge. Clubs should not let unauthorized financial firms exploit that loyalty by putting potentially dodgy products in front of millions of fans.”

Head of the FCA department overseeing scams, promotions, and consumer investments, Fiona Mackinnon-Miller emphasized the importance of conducting proper due diligence before entering sponsorship agreements. The watchdog also warned that money received from unauthorized firms could, in certain circumstances, be considered criminal property under the UK’s Proceeds of Crime Act. 

Crypto Partnerships Face Increased Scrutiny

The FCA did not identify specific clubs or sponsorship deals under review, but confirmed it has already contacted organizations where concerns have been identified. The regulator said it is working alongside government bodies, the Premier League, and the Independent Football Regulator to address the issue across the sport. 

Several major football clubs currently maintain sponsorship agreements with cryptocurrency firms. These include partnerships involving crypto exchanges OKX and Manchester City, as well as BingX’s sponsorship of Chelsea. The FCA’s latest intervention signals growing regulatory scrutiny of crypto-related marketing within professional sports.
