UK Bans Cryptocurrency Donations to Political Parties
The UK Government has announced plans to ban cryptocurrency donations to political parties. The government is citing growing concerns over foreign interference in domestic politics. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the decision following an independent review led by former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft into risks posed by overseas financial influence.
The review was promoted by several high-profile incidents, including the conviction of former Reform UK MEP Nathan Gill for accepting bribes linked to pro-Russian interests. Officials say cryptocurrency’s anonymity makes it difficult to trace the origin of political donations.
Crypto Anonymity Raises Security Concerns
Housing Secretary Steve Reed said the government accepted findings that crypto transactions could enable illicit funding and undermine public trust. The ban will act as a temporary measure until stronger regulations are established. The policy particularly affects Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, which has previously accepted Bitcoin donations. Electoral Commission data shows that the party received a record £9 million donation from aviation entrepreneur and crypto investor Christopher Harborne.
The UK government will also cap annual political donations from overseas British citizens at £100,000, with strict penalties for any violations. Housing Secretary Steve Reed revealed that the change would take immediate effect, with political parties given 30 days to return any donations exceeding the limit once the rules are enforced. Criminal penalties will apply after this period.
The cap will apply to all UK elections, including the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections, Senedd elections, and English local elections.
