Republican Lawmakers Push for Permanent CBDC Ban Ahead of House Vote
Key Takeaways:
- House Republicans aim to make the CBDC ban permanent.
- Privacy and economic freedom concerns are central to the opposition to CBDC.
- Nigeria, Jamaica, and the Bahamas have fully deployed CBDCs, while 41 others are in the pilot phase.
The Republican lawmakers are advocating for a permanent ban on a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The U.S House is preparing to vote on the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, and the lawmakers are expected to vote on this. The original Senate bill included a temporary prohibition on the Federal Reserve from issuing CBDC until 2030. However, House Republicans, including Congressman Mike Flood and Representative Warren Davidson, are pushing to remove any “backdoor green light” and make the ban permanent.
Privacy Concerns
Critics of CBDCs argue that such a currency could threaten individual privacy and open doors to government misuse. Tom Emmer, House Majority whip, said, “The Chinese Communist Party uses a central bank digital currency (CBDC) to surveil and control its people. If the US adopted its own CBDC, privacy and economic freedom as we know it would cease to exist.”
Emmer’s “Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act” has already passed in the House and seeks to block the Federal Reserve from ever creating a digital currency. He said, “My Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act BANS our government from ever creating this Orwellian tool. The House passed it. Now, the Senate must act.”
Legislative Hurdles
Globally, only Nigeria, Jamaica, and the Bahamas have fully deployed CBDCs, while 41 countries are in pilot phases. Alternate bills, such as Senator Mike Lee’s “No CBDC Act,” have previously stalled. The current House vote could signal the future trajectory of CBDC legislation, but the measure must pass both chambers and receive presidential approval before becoming law.
