Key Takeaways

  • OKX launches OKX Money, combining stablecoin balances, transfers, and card spending in a standalone app.
  • Eligible USDG balances can earn up to 10% APY, with rates and qualification varying by market.
  • The rollout targets emerging markets, as specific launch countries have not been disclosed yet.

OKX has launched OKX Money on October 6, a standalone app for saving, sending, and spending dollar-backed stablecoins in participating markets.

The product combines stablecoin balances, rewards, and virtual or physical payment cards, which extends the exchange’s services into everyday finance, according to a statement released Tuesday.

OKX Money targets emerging markets where currency fluctuations, limited access to banking services, and foreign exchange fees can make it difficult to protect savings and spend globally.

“For many, accessing US dollar savings requires a foreign bank account or relationship with a financial institution. We built OKX Money to lower those barriers,” OKX said, adding that OKX Money is the first step in a longer program.

However, OKX has not disclosed the specific initial launch countries, and availability depends on local requirements.

Stablecoin Balances Meet Card Spending

OKX Money lets users fund their accounts with more than 50 supported currencies, with deposits converted into dollar-backed stablecoins. The app supports USDG, USDC, and USDT, and OKX says customers can switch among supported tokens without conversion fees.

For purchases in another currency, OKX says its cards charge no foreign exchange fee or conversion markup.

“Hundreds of millions of people have been excluded from dollar-denominated savings and frictionless global spending because the infrastructure was never built for them. We believe it is our responsibility to help change that,” OKX said.

The app offers up to 10% cashback on eligible purchases through its loyalty program. It also has a referral system that lets users earn commission when their referrals activate their card and spend.

OKX Money uses the same account as the OKX exchange. Existing customers can sign in with their current credentials, while new registrations create an account usable across both apps, according to the company’s help center.

Up to 10% APY and Global Card Spending

Eligible customers can earn up to 10% annual percentage yield (APY) on qualifying USDG holdings without staking or locking their funds, OKX said.

The app also enables customers to use a virtual or physical card to spend globally. When making a transaction in another currency, OKX Money charges zero foreign exchange fees and adds no conversion markup.

The app launch brings dollar-denominated balances and spending into one interface, but access remains tied to regional eligibility.

OKX says it will expand beyond participating markets as it demonstrates that the product performs and customers receive adequate support.

Its announcement says OKX’s goal is to protect what people earn and make it easier to save, send, and spend money.
