Bitcoin Rebounds Above $83,000 as Korean Stocks and Nasdaq Futures Slide

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin recovered above $83,000 after briefly falling below $81,000 as a pullback in U.S. tech features, and a sell-off in Asian chip stocks weighed on risk appetite
  • South Korea’s KOSPI fell roughly 6%, while Nasdaq futures lost 0.7%.
  • Traders await the October 14 U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, with some expecting institutional investors to protect their crypto portfolios through hedging instead of reducing their exposure.

Bitcoin climbed back above $83,000 during Asian trading on Tuesday, October 13, and reversed an early selloff even as Korean equities and U.S. technology futures remained under pressure.

The digital currency briefly traded below $81,000 at 00:50 UTC before recovering, reported CoinDesk.

Ether bounced from a five-day low, while XRP recovered after touching its lowest level in three weeks. Solana (SOL), Zcash (ZEC), and several other leading tokens followed a similar pattern, according to CoinDesk.

Korean Chip Stocks Lead Declines

The early crypto drop came as South Korea’s KOSPI plunged roughly 6% intraday, falling below 6,000, its lowest level since July 31, reported CNBC.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each lost roughly 8%, extending their losing streaks to five sessions.

Concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) valuations and growing competition from Chinese memory-chip producers rattled investors. Nasdaq futures fell 0.7%.

Bitcoin’s recovery showed an intraday divergence from technology equities. However, StoneX Trading analyst David Scutt reported that its rolling 20-session correlation with Nasdaq 100 futures had strengthened to approximately 0.69.

This suggests the rebound alone does not establish a lasting break from stock-market trends.

Inflation Report Becomes Next Test

Crypto traders are now looking to the upcoming consumer price index (CPI) report as the next major catalyst.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules September’s CPI report for Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

Market-making firm Wincent’s senior director Paul Howard told CoinDesk he expects institutional investors to protect holdings through derivatives rather than materially reduce crypto exposure ahead of the release.

His comments describe an expectation, rather than confirmed investor positioning.
