Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), one of Tanzania’s largest hospitals, is set to expand its capacity for children’s surgery thanks to a significant donation of $400,000 from Swedish entrepreneur and philanthropist Carl Moon.

Carl Moon, best known as the founder and CEO of The Moon Group Investment LLC, began his career as a cashier before making a name for himself through early cryptocurrency investments. Since then, he has become one of the most influential young voices in blockchain and fintech. In addition to his contributions to the blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors, Carl is also known for his philanthropic initiatives. His most recent donation would help construct a dedicated child-focused operating room and recovery area for children at KCMC, Tanzania. The installation of the pediatric surgical suite is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

“I am very happy to be able to support them in the way that I will fund that surgical room in Tanzania in Kilimanjaro, and basically, we're going to be able to save up to 2,000 children every single year from that operating room, which is incredible,” said Carl Runefelt about his new philanthropic initiative in Africa.

The Current State of Pediatric Surgical Facilities at KCMC

At present, most pediatric surgeries are done in adult operating rooms, which causes delays and increases the risk for children who need surgery right away. The new building should allow for more than 2,000 pediatric surgeries per year, up from just 200. It will also double as a training hub for surgical teams across East Africa, boosting long-term healthcare resilience.

“We are building more than a surgical suite. We are giving children a fighting chance,” said Garreth Wood MBE, co-founder of Kids Operating Room, who toured the region with Carl Moon earlier this year.

Medical Crisis Around the World

According to UNICEF, global under-five mortality rates have dropped by 61% since 1990, yet an estimated 13,100 children still die daily from preventable causes. Continued investment in the healthcare sector can accelerate this progress. The World Economic Forum estimates that every dollar invested in maternal and child health could generate up to $3.8 trillion in economic benefits by 2035, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition to Carl Moon’s donation for KCMC in Tanzania, he has donated over $182,000 to other child-focused projects worldwide. Carl’s commitment to children’s healthcare stems from a deeply personal place. His younger brother, who has Down Syndrome, has had more than 60 surgeries. This has made him more dedicated to helping people with disabilities and contributing to the initiatives aimed at children’s well-being.

Carl has previously donated AED 300,000 to the Emirates Down Syndrome Association and $100,000to the EB Research Partnership.
